Here are some tips and useful applications to help you navigate through the Chinese web with ease.Essential QQ services and processes such as account signup and security are available in English but, as you might know, some of the additional features such as VIP membership are still in Mandarin Chinese.

In the meanwhile you want to take a look at the following tips to ensure you can navigate through the vast galaxy of QQ services for the Chinese speaking audience – even if you don’t know the language!

If you use any of the above (or a combination of them) you won’t have any trouble understanding most of the Chinese used by Tencent websites. We strongly suggest you to download and install a tooltip translator/dictionary because it’s the fastest and most intuitive way to read Chinese (and learn it too, if you are keen!).

How To Translate Your Chats with QQ International

QQ International lets you overcome linguistic barriers and comes with a live chat translator. It’s a great way to connect with people from all over the world and make new friends without necessarily being a linguist!

The chat translator is available on Windows, Android, and iPhone/iOS.

QQ International for iPhone/iOS and Android

Instantly translate your incoming chats in QQ International for Android or iPhone/iOS by tapping on any incoming message. Please notice that the performance of this function may vary according to your network settings.

If you want to change the destination language you can do so via Settings -> Translator as below:

 

QQ International for Windows

Start a conversation with a contact and inside the chat window you’ll find the “Translate” button at the bottom left corner.

How to Translate Incoming Messages

To translate incoming message you simply need to highlight the text and click on the icon. The selected text will be automatically translated according to your settings (which you can change at any time – see below for more).

How to Translate Outgoing Messages

Write up your chat as you would normally do… and click on “Translate” to send it. Once sent, your message will be automatically translated according to your options. That’s it!

For each chat window, QQ International will remember what language you used last time. To save time, we recommend you to use the hotkey ALT+E to translate your messages instead of clicking on the “Translate” button.

Translator Settings

Make sure you’ve customized your translator settings before using it. Click on the  “Translator” button, then click on the “Translator Settings” button as below.

The Translator Settings interface:

  • Add or delete destination language(s) for your translated chats
  • Select whether to send the original chat in addition to its translation
  • Automatically translate all messages you send out
    (by default, after clicking “Translate” you need to click“Send” to send the translated message to your contact)
  • Hide or display the translate button in your chat windows

Once you customize your translator settings, click OK to save.
